Varients of Mahjong

Mahjongg is perhaps the more varied game in the world. Each area tends to have their own version and consider other variations as incorrect. Most differences are limited to scoring but there are song very notable variations.

* The "Chineses Classical Mahjongg" is the oldest variation of Mahjongg. It was introduced in America in the 1920 and has a small but loyal following, very few players in Asia play this variation.

* Possibly the most popular form of Mahjongg is "Hong Kong Mahjong" or "Cantonese Mahjong". It is very similar to "Chinese Classical" but it has minor scoring differences.

* In Taiwan the variation that is prevalent is "Taiwanese Mahjong". This varient involves hands of 16 tiles instead of the 13 tile hands of other varients. Tiawanese Mahjong also has bonuses for dealers and recurring dealerships and multiple players can win from a single discard.

* Japanese Mahjong is the standardized version of Mahjong found in Japan, and is very prevalent in vidoe games. In addition to changes in scoring, the rules of riichi and dora are unique highlights of Japanese Mahjong.

* Western-Classical Mahjong is a varient descended from the Babcocks Mahjong of the 1920's. Generally this term refers to the Wright-Patterson rules.

* The National mah Jongg League and the American Mah-Jongg Association created the varient called "American Mahjong". This varient uses Joker tiles, the Charleston, sets/melds of five or more tiles, eschews the Chow and a standard hand. The NMJL and AMJA have their own version of this varient that differ slightly in scoring. These varients are refered to as Mahjongg and Mah-Jongg, regardless purist insist that American Mahjong is a seperate game.

* Malaysia Mahjong is a simplified version of Mahjong for 3 players with hands made of 13 times. There are a total of 84 tiles on the table and the games uses Joker tiles.Unlike other Mahjong varients, Malaysia Mahjong only contains the "tong zhi" tiles. The jackpot or Royal Flush rules of winning are used which has a player that accumulates a point of 10 to have hit the jackpot and some players have that player winning double the stake.
